The art of being heard

Brain storming

Some days I find it harder then others to come up with new content ideas. One site is doing well but needs to keep growing, the others need a lot of work on the content side. Time to break out the notepad and go site in a coffee shop.

New look

I’m switching to a canned theme for my blog until I can build a new one. The old one was too dark.

Testing android wordpress app

Testing posting to blog from my g1. Overall it gives me the extra character count when twitter isn’t enough. Other then that not sure. Iwould use it for much. Maybe could also use it for short blog ideas, but think I would have to do a longer follow up post on a devce with a bigger keyboard.

2 Months

without comments

Blogging isn’t something I do often, or well. I always start with the intention of doing it everyday. During the day things come to me that would be great topics to write on, things that I have strong feelings about. The problem is distraction after work, which sucks away my time. I looked today and saw it has been two months since my last post. So today I am again going to try and post but it wont be an everyday thing I will try and post when I have an idea. That might be 3 or more times a day or once a week. I have one post mostly finished about a creative marketing idea here at work, Select Blinds, I should have it up tonight.

The ultimate goal is to find my voice online. lets see where we go.

Is it Friday yet?

Spending the last two days doing what amounts to little more than copy and paste data entry has me longing for this week to end. I’m working on spending more time really using my blog to express things I see, hear, feel and think. So this post will offer no value other than a small insight into my tiny world.

This weekend is my sons 10th birthday celebration, I would tell everyone what he is getting but he might see it. Thinking about having a 10 year old makes me wonder what I’m doing now and will be doing when he turns 20. I can always hope it isn’t doing data entry, but it could be. Over the last month I have had no less than 14 offers to be part of startups, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that leap yet. I have a small focus on some PPC driven sites for a little extra income and I do some SEO work for friends, but other than that my focus needs to be helping my wife get her stuff in order and online. She has lots of creative ideas and some great product just no way to show it. I am going to work on wordpress this week and figure out how to make it super simple for the non-geek in my life. Once she is rolling I am sure she will be able to keep it going with little help on my side. She just needs the tools set out for her.

The only way this seems to be possible, me getting the work done, is to set timelines and be held accountable to them. I need a good online project management tool to help me with this. Maybe something that I can tie into Google calendar so I can s it from my g1. I have access to many many tools that can be used to prompt me to do what needs to be done on time I just have to really focus and use them.

Well it’s time to get back to my day job, one more day of data entry and my current project should be done and ready for launch.

Test post using BlogDesk

without comments

green-1

im trying to insert an image, i like that it lets me know its to large to fit but when i crop it, it seems to resize the image into the space set by the crop but not realy crop it. this leads to a very distortated image

green-2

The second image seems to crop ok, i also turned it B&W. im not sure i will use that option much, if i wanted the image B&W id have done it in lightroom or PS.

green-3 i also dont seem to be able to use the shift key to maek the crop selection a true square.

over all this seems like a much better desktop posting app then live writer in terms of handling images.

one thing it turns out i dont have is inline spell check, and anyone that has read anything i typed with out spell check knows i need that to be there.

we will play withthis and see what happens, maybe a workflow that goes from word to here to blog might work out.

it lets me edit after posting which is kewl.

now if i could link to a hosted image on something like flickr.

Prepping images for a blog post in lightroom 2

without comments

Step 1

Open lightroom

Step 2

step-1

once in lightroom make sure you have “library” chosen on the menu in the upper right.
Step 3
step-2
Pick the image you want to export.
Step 4
step-3
in the top left of the screen click on “file”, then click on “Export”
Step 5
step-4
an option box will popup. if it doesn’t already say “Files on disk” in the main box click on it and chose that option from the list.
step 6
step-5
The first box below “Files on disk” will be “Export Location” use this to decide where you are going to save your images. click on “choose” in the lower right.
Step 7
step-6
pick the main folder you want to use for your images
step 8
step-7
check the option for “Put in SubFolder”
step 9
step-8
Put a name related to the Blog post you are working on in the box. you can name it anything you want but i find it easier to use a folder name related to the post im working on. this also helps when you are looking for an image you used in the past.
step 10
step-9
The next piece is to scroll down until you come to the section labeled “Image Sizing”. check the box for “Resize to Fit”
step 11
step-10
make sure “Width & Height” is selected. with this set Lightroom will automatically resize the image so that neither width or height are above the size you set. this is great for when you have images that are not square it will resize height or width to make the image the correct size, also retaining the aspect ratio.
step 12
step-11
the “Don’t Enlarge” option keeps Lightroom from scaling up images that are already smaller then the selected size.
step 13
step-12
Set the “Resolution” to 72. This will make the file size of the images smaller as well as make them not print “Photo Quality”, This is a good option if you dont want people to reprint your work from your site.
step 14
step-13
set your image size, both (W)idth and (H)eight. I personally choose between 200 and 500 depending on the size you want to show on your blog.
step 15
step-14
Click on “Export” and your images are saved.

Next post will cover adding images to a post using “Window Live Writer”
